Castle wins role on Passivhaus grammar school project in Paisley
South Tyneside-based Castle is to supply full mechanical, electrical, public health and renewable services for the new Passivhaus-certified Paisley Grammar School in Renfrewshire.
Castle, which has offices in Edinburgh and Glasgow, was appointed by the main contractor Morrison Construction as mechanical and electrical contractor. It has partnered with Morrison on a vast amount of similar projects for a variety of schools across Scotland.
Managing director at Castle, Andrew Dawson, said: “This is a significant project, and we thank Morrison Construction for its continued trust in our services. The development of the new school will hugely benefit the community of Paisley. It is a pleasure to be involved in delivering high-quality projects that not only support regional economic growth but limit the impact the development has on the environment and the local community.
“As part of our own sustainable journey, we continue to invest and upskill our team, with members of each department achieving Passivhaus Institute certification. This contract is another wonderful opportunity for us to apply this construction methodology to a modern, forward-looking school design and build project.”
Paisley Grammar School will replace the existing school. Boasting a 300-seat theatre, as well as becoming the first Passivhaus school in the local authority, it is expected to open in the summer of 2026.
The project is being funded by Renfrewshire Council and Scottish Futures Trust, supported by funding from the Scottish Government’s Learning Estate Improvement Programme.
The scope of works includes the design, supply, installation and commissioning of mechanical systems consisting of above ground drainage, domestic services, low temperature hot water heating, underfloor heating, ventilation and air conditioning, incoming mains, thermal insulation, commissioning and building management systems to monitor and control energy use and sprinklers. Also, the installation of air source heat pumps.
Electrical works include LV installations, small power, fire and intruder alarms, security systems, lighting, including controls, earthing and bonding, lightning protection, data, induction loops and EV charging. The services will be installed to meet the high standards of Passivhaus.
Allan Cunningham, operations director for Morrison Construction Building Central, added: “We are delighted to once again be working with Castle on an important education project. As an established member of our supply chain, we have built a strong relationship with Castle, which only strengthens our delivery for clients like Renfrewshire Council.”
