CECA honours young talent

More that 550 of the profession’s leading lights gathered at CECA Scotland’s twentieth annual dinner held in The City Hotel, Glasgow.

The following awards were announced:

Most Promising Technician Sam Somerville of WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff

Most Promising Trainee Civil Engineer Jenny Nicolson of BAMNuttall

Most Promising Trainee Quantity Surveyor Chris Cameron of Amey

Most Promising Civil Engineering Apprentice Steven Reid of the Daviot Group

Each winner received their award from Christina McKelvie MSP, Convenor of the Scottish Parliament’s European & External Relations Committee, Keith Brown, MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure, Investment and Cities, and Rab Bell CECA Scotland Chairman.

“It was a pleasure to meet and present the awards to the talented young people who have made civil engineering their career” said Christina McKelvie. “Scottish Apprenticeship Week is all about celebrating the success of our young people. It is crucial that we continue to invest in our young people by making sure that they have the right opportunities to learn and develop their skills to ensure economic development and a strong economy.”

This is the first year of CECA Scotland’s Emerging Talent awards and is one strand of CECA Scotland Board’s strategy of developing and recognising the excellence of the existing workforce to reflect the changing nature of the sector and to reward new entrants where commitment and worth has been demonstrated.

“These awards celebrate the achievements of the young people in our sector and indicates CECA Scotland’s undertaking to develop our own people” said Rab Bell, Chairman of CECA Scotland. “We were overwhelmed at quality of the entries we received. The winners are all very deserving of their awards and we look forward to watching how their careers develop in the coming years.”

The Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Scotland represents around 100 contractors across Scotland ranging from large multinational companies engaged in flagship infrastructure projects to rural SMEs carrying out civil engineering works in their communities. Our members currently deliver around 80% of Scotland’s annual civil engineering outturn of £3bn p.a. and employ over 25,000 PAYE people with many more in the supply chain.
