City Access Scaffolding backs national push for Trade Apprenticeship Discount Card

If you studied in Edinburgh in the late ‘90s, chances are you remember Snapfax – the foldable magnetic discount card that saved you money on food, travel, and more.

Students still benefit from similar schemes today.

But what about trade apprentices?

Their starting wage is just £6.40 per hour (soon to rise slightly). And many struggle to afford even the basics.

That’s why Kirsty Allan, Director at City Access Scaffolding, is working behind the scenes to change that.

She’s been lobbying for a national Trade Apprenticeship Discount Card, which would give apprentices the same financial relief students already receive.

“The conversations haven’t been easy,” says Kirsty. “We’ve had to challenge outdated processes, push for change, and prove why this is so needed right now.”

City is currently in talks with discount provider TOTUM OneVoice about developing the card and rolling it out nationwide. The next step is to secure financial backing from within the construction sector.

“No one should have to drop out of their apprenticeship just because they can’t afford to live. This could change lives.”

The idea has already struck a chord. A recent LinkedIn post on the initiative attracted over 1,000 reactions, with many in the industry calling for action.
