81 apprentices from across all sectors of the business including, construction, administration, heating and painting and decorating were shortlisted for the awards at the City Chambers in Glasgow.

24 awards were handed out at the event which saw 2nd year apprentice painter and decorator Lisa Murphy named City Building Apprentice of the Year in addition to winning the 2nd Year Painter and Decorator award earlier in the evening.

Lisa (19) from Shettleston has had a successful year having already scooped the Trades House Modern Apprentice of the Year award and has made it through to the next stage of the prestigious Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year Awards having won the regional heat.

Speaking after picking up her brace of awards Lisa said: “It was great to be nominated for the award but to win is an amazing surprise.

“I’ve learned a lot working at City Building and have been given the opportunity to work on incredible high profile projects including the World Gymnastics Championships and the ‘Hello, My name is Paul Smith’ exhibition. Every day is different and I feel it’s given me the opportunity to gain more experience and learn new skills and techniques.”

Graham Paterson, executive director of City Building, said: “The awards are a great chance for all of us at City Building to celebrate the excellent work being carried out by our company’s emerging talent and to have the apprentices’ families in attendance to experience their achievements adds to the excitement.

“Lisa is a prime example of the type of skilled young tradesperson that City Building is determined to develop and it is important that we take the time to recognise her and the other award winners for their achievements over the past year.

“We are very proud to support and develop anyone who demonstrates the drive and enthusiasm it takes to succeed which Lisa and the other apprentices recognised at the awards clearly have. I’m confident that they all have bright careers in front of them.”

The shortlisted apprentices were recommended by their managers and went through a rigorous interview process by the management team in order to be selected.

The judges selected Lisa as the City Building Apprentice of the Year for her capability and logical approach to tasks and attitude towards her job. They commented that she was very thorough and always produced an excellent standard of work.

Adam Gibbs and Kevin McCarron were also recognised on the night with special Life Long Learning awards for their hard work and dedication over the last 12 months.

Adam and Kevin entered the adult apprentice programme from City Building’s supported facility Royal Strathclyde Blindcraft Industries (RSBi). They are due to complete their apprenticeships later this year.

To top the celebrations off on the night, Clyde One DJ Grant Thomson presented City Building with a Gold Cash for Kids Corporate Patron disc in recognition of the company’s efforts to support and raise vital funds for Cash for Kids which aims to support the most vulnerable children in our communities affected by child poverty.
