City Building helps employees reconnect with nature
Construction firm City Building created a buzz about nature when it hosted an open day featuring honey bees, frogs and birds of prey at its Glasgow premises.
The initiative was held at the company’s Darnick Street site on Friday 2nd June, in celebration of the United Nation’s World Environment Day.
The international awareness day, which will be marked globally on Monday 5thJune, seeks to highlight the many ways human behaviour can positively, and negatively, effect planet Earth.
Each year, organisers focus on one particularly pressing environmental concern and have chosen ‘nature’ as the theme for 2017. As part of the campaign, people from across the world are being urged to reconnect with their natural surroundings. They are being encouraged to spend time in the great outdoors and appreciate how much we depend on water supplies, ecosystems, fresh air and wildlife.
To assist with the global mission, City Building welcomed representatives from leading groups including the Woodland Trust, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Home Energy Scotland, PlanBee, an organisation dedicated to safeguarding the UK’s honey bee population, and conservationist charity Frog Life.
The organisations were on hand to talk about the ways employees can contribute to worldwide environmental causes. Employees were also given the chance to capture selfies with a real-life Harris hawk which was taking part in demonstrations in the yard.
In addition to visiting various exhibitions, the City Building team raised funds for the organisations with raffles and home baking stalls.
Dr Graham Paterson, executive director at City Building, said: “As a business, we have a strong commitment to sustainable development which includes investing in green technologies and educating our workforce on how they can take steps to protect the world around us.
“Celebrating World Environment Day was a great opportunity to introduce our employees to the issues that we care about and to encourage them to play their part in taking a sustainable approach to both their jobs and lives.”
Warren Bader, founder and CEO of PlanBee said: “It is fantastic to see a big organisation like City Building embracing World Environment Day and taking meaningful steps to educate others on this incredibly important issue. The company’s commitment to sustainability is impressive. It was great to be able to meet the team to talk about the vital work we are doing at PlanBee to protect declining honey bee populations and highlight the many ways they can contribute to the cause.”
