Clark Contracts gives behind the scenes look at Scotland’s National Retrofit Centre
Clark Contracts has opened its doors to over 60 guests for a look Behind the Build of their current project at Scotland’s National Retrofit Centre.
Designed in collaboration with John Gilbert Architects, Luths Services and Narro, the project is set to deliver the first phase of retrofit measures and refurbishment works which aim to achieve both the International EnerPHit and Scottish Net Zero Public Sector Building standards once all phases have been delivered.
Taking a fabric first approach, Phase 1 involved replacing the existing curtain walling system with a new insulated CLT panel system, manufactured at the adjacent BE-ST Innovation Factory. This system will be enhanced by increased roof and floor insulation, dramatically reducing the building’s heating demands.
The exclusive events, held over February and March, were held in partnership with Built Environment – Smarter Transformation (BE-ST) and John Gilbert Architects (JGA). The events allowed the contractor’s customers and consultants to have a closer look at the deep retrofit works that are taking place and learn more about the vision of the EnerPHit project, its journey so far and the challenges encountered.
Attendees were first shown a presentation from Gavin Johnston, from BE-ST, Rupert Daly and Barbara Lantschner from John Gilbert Architects and Clark Contracts Director, Gerry Cummins on the project. The groups were then given tours of BE-ST’s Innovation Factory and the Clark Contracts site at the National Retrofit Centre and were able to learn more about the process of the retrofit, including gaining a closer look at the construction of the insulated and homegrown Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) panels, which are forming the ultra-low energy panelised facade.
This retrofit not only seeks to achieve the EnerPHit standard for energy efficiency, but once complete, the building will become a demonstrator of retrofit techniques and best practice for professionals in Scotland and beyond to learn from.
The site has also held a variety of tours, including two open tours which were available to book, along with separate tours for students from Edinburgh Napier University students and apprentices and trainees from Clark Contracts’ award-winning Academy.
Gerry Cummins, director at Clark Contracts, said: “It was fantastic to welcome over 60 guests from across the industry to our site at Scotland’s National Retrofit Centre. This project is founded on innovation, skills development and collaboration and we were delighted to be able to showcase the project and BE-ST’s facility.”
Gavin Johnston, impact manager at BE-ST, added: “These Behind the Build events have been a great opportunity to share our experience of delivering innovation through the deep collaboration driving our retrofit programme. By taking a fabric-first approach and using advanced solutions such as our insulated CLT panels and innovative zero direct emissions heating system, we’re reducing our energy consumption and creating a space that will support industry learning and serve as a benchmark for best practice across the sector.”
