Consent granted to demolish former Rothesay Academy

Argyll and Bute Council has secured consent to demolish the former Rothesay Academy on Bute.

The B-listed building has been empty since the school relocated in 2007 and all avenues to redevelop or sell it have been exhausted. The building is in a poor state of repair and has become a magnet for vandalism and anti-social behaviour.

The council will now work with its partners to deliver a new housing development on the site – helping to regenerate the area and address the housing emergency.

Councillor Ross Moreland, the council’s policy lead for finance and commercial services, said: “It is never an easy decision to demolish a listed building but we have tried everything we could to try and repurpose it, and economically, it is just not viable. We have received consent to demolish it, in consultation with Historic Environment Scotland, and we will now move forward to develop our strategy and secure the required funding to carry out the process.”
