The incident is said to have happened at the new multi-million-pound Princes Street attraction on Tuesday.

Sources claim people at the centre tried to pull the lift off the workman but he was eventually freed by firefighters. The workman was then taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

A nearby source told Deadline News: “A workman was crushed under a disability platform lift being installed/worked on at the new Johnnie Walker visitor Centre on Princes Street.

“Fifteen people tried to lift it off him. He was eventually freed by the fire brigade I believe.”

A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 15.09 on 24 August 2021 to attend an incident at Johnnie Walker on Princes Street, Edinburgh.

“Three resources including a critical care paramedic were dispatched to the scene and the patient was transported to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.”

The incident comes just two weeks before the centre’s grand opening.

Whisky giant Diageo, which is behind the new flagship visitor centre, is renovating the former House of Fraser store into a multi-storey whisky centre complete with rooftop bars and brand experience.

The tourist attraction is set to open on September 6.
