The firm, which operates throughout the Borders from its base in Galashiels, has previously been involved in Teviot Footbridge in Hawick and Laidlaw Court housing development in Galashiels, which picked up a Scottish Homes Award in 2011.

The new café and footbridge is part of the £3.64 million Wilton Lodge Park Regeneration Project, which is funded by Scottish Borders Council (SBC) and Heritage Lottery Fund.

While the café works are undertaken, a temporary catering facility sited near the Zandra Elliot Bandstand is expected to be operational later this month, with the council in final discussions with a preferred bidder for the free let.

Alongside the procurement of the café, the council have also undertaken the procurement of the new play park that will be located on the former bowling green.

The play park is also expected to open in spring 2017.

Initial work to clear the area required for the outdoor classroom has been completed, with the main works to take place this summer, and are due to be finished by autumn 2016.

In addition, work on the Gilbert Fountain starts this summer.

Councillor Gordon Edgar, SBC’s executive member for roads and infrastructure, said: “I welcome the progress being made on the new café as part of the Wilton Lodge Park Regeneration project.

“While the café will not be operational until next year, we expect a temporary catering facility to be up and running in coming weeks to serve users of the park throughout the busy summer months.

“There is no doubt the regeneration project has already improved the quality and standard of Hawick’s much loved park, with an exciting programme of events and volunteering opportunities encouraging more people to enjoy Wilton Lodge Park.”
