Contractor fined £24,000 over death of workman
A contractor has been fined £24,000 for health and safety failings that led to the death of a workman in his yard in West Lothian.
JML Road Surfacing boss Jacob Hendry was prosecuted after Viorel Vicol, 27, was killed by an 11,000 watt electric shock at his premises at Kirknewton, West Lothian, on June 3, 2015.
Livingston Sheriff Court heard Hendry, 45, had allowed a field next to his yard to be used for dumping topsoil from a contract Mr Vicol was working on.
The court heard Mr Vicol suffered the electric shock when he began emptying the truck underneath an overhead power cable which crossed the site.
Passing sentence, Sheriff Peter Hammond told Hendry he had admitted a serious offence of failing to ensure visitors to his site were warned about health and safety risks.
