Originally anticipated to be complete by mid-2026, the Peterhead Community Campus was hit with a lengthy delay after the preferred contractor Robertson Group withdrew from the project last year coupled with issues with the supply chain and market volatility.

Members of Aberdeenshire Council were presented with different options on how to progress the project based on the latest costs and value to the taxpayer.

Councillors agreed to proceed with the option that will see a major investment in the construction of a new Peterhead Academy at Kinmundy Road. 

The project is set to open by August 2028.

The decision reflects the need for a new Academy following a condition assessment of the current school. 

It also means the original proposals for replacement facilities for Dales Park, Meethill and Anna Ritchie schools will not go ahead, and the current schools will be retained.

The different options put before members follow engagement with the construction sector on likely costs and timescales.

Provost of Aberdeenshire Cllr Judy Whyte said: “I am pleased that we now have clarity on the way forward for the Peterhead community.

“For the Academy, today’s decision will provide pupils with a new school which meets the needs of pupils and prepares them for work and life in the 21st century.

“We recognise, however, that the decision will be disappointing for the primary and special schools no longer within scope of the project. Discussions are underway regarding future improvement and investment in those schools.

“In the current financial climate, we are not in a position to build what we initially set out to, but this remains an ambitious project. 

“Officers have explored all possible options, and whilst this is a big, complex issue, the rising financial pressures mean that continuing with the project as originally envisaged is not viable. 

“As a council, we remain committed to a discussion in the community to ensure Dales Park, Meethill and Anna Ritchie schools can keep providing a positive learning environment for our pupils.

“In the meantime, we know they will continue working to deliver the best possible education and learning environment for our children.”

The decision will now require the Director of Education and Children’s Services to report back to council on the design, programme, procurement and financial implication. This is intended to be in June.

A separate feasibility study is underway for Site 2 – the current Academy site - which is intended for community use. This study will determine the scope, programme and financial implications.

In addition, members agreed to commission an external investigation to look for lessons learnt from the project and the council’s Chief Executive will develop the scope of the investigation in consultation with the council’s group leaders.
