A project to extend and refurbish St Rognvald’s had been under development.

Council convener Steven Heddle said: “Today the council took the bold decision to move ahead instead with a new-build project in Kirkwall.

“This will result in a purpose-built, high-quality care home, incorporating all the modern features we need to deliver care to the highest standards for Orkney’s older people.

“In taking this decision we’re planning for the future and the needs of our community, and in particular our older folk.”

Caroline Sinclair, chief officer for health and social care, said: “A great deal of work has gone into looking at how best we can provide residential care services that are fit for the future.

“As the design work to extend and refurbish St Rognvald House has progressed, it has become increasingly clear that a range of challenges would need to be overcome in converting and adding to an older facility – not least the disruption the work would cause for people living at St Rognvald’s and our staff.

“Today’s decision to build something new demonstrates a commitment to quality care provision. We’re confident this will be welcomed by residents, their families and staff.”

The new care facility is due to be completed and operational by the summer of 2019, a similar timescale to that envisaged for the original project.
