Councillors approve Home Group project in Dundee

A social housing development in Dundee has been given the green light despite the application not being in accordance with the local development plan.

The development by Home Group will see 45 new homes in the Mill o’ Mains area of the city.

A mixture of 17 detached, semi-detached, terraced houses and 28 flats will be delivered on Hebrides Drive. The flats will be cottage-style with wheelchair access on the ground floor and apartments above.

Planning officers had recommended the approval of the JTP-designed application despite it going against local plan due the sizes of the bedrooms and gardens in some properties.

A report to the local authority’s planning committee stated: “It is considered in this instance that the proposals would be a positive redevelopment for the area and would address specific local housing needs.

“The provision of good quality social housing which is of a size and form that meets the needs of the local area, while not fully meeting adopted Dundee local development plan standards, is considered to be acceptable and would be of sufficient weight to justify a departure in this instance.”

Committee convener Will Dawson said conditions attached to the application would reduce the noise from traffic on nearby Forfar Road.
