Councillors to discuss plan to transform Dumbarton Rock and waterfront

Dumbarton RockA total of 22 improvement projects to transform Dumbarton Rock and the waterfront could be approved next week.

Councillors are to discuss an action plan for the area which was identified through a Scottish Government-funded Charrette held in the town in February.

The projects which are expected to make the biggest difference to the area have been identified as priorities.

The priority projects include:

  • Creating a new waterfront path to connect the Rock and Castle with the town centre.
  • Investigating the possibility of introducing a multi-use facility at the base of the Rock and Castle which could provide community facilities such as a café and exhibition space.
  • Provide coach and car parking facilities in and around the Rock and Castle to encourage increased visitor numbers.

  • Enhance the public areas close to the Rock and Castle and the approach from Castle Road.
  • Improve the rock climbing area at the Rock.
  • Complete the Castle improvement plan which aims to improve the overall visitor experience.
  • Investigate the feasibility of installing floodlights to illuminate the Rock and Castle.

  • The design Charrette took place over four days in February when an intensive consultation was held with local people, businesses, landowners and other interested parties in the design of proposals for the Rock and the areas around it, with a particular focus on how to promote it as a tourist destination.

A report outlining the outcomes and recommendations will be presented to West Dunbartonshire Council’s infrastructure, regeneration and economic development committee on Wednesday September 16. If councillors approve the action plan at the discussions to begin making progress on the priority projects will begin immediately.

Jim McAloon, head of regeneration and economic development, said: “The design Charrette events proved very popular and helped us to engage with residents as we looked to shape the future of Dumbarton Rock, the Castle and the surrounding area. It was important that we took on the views of all interested parties so that we understood fully what the priorities should be when developing improvement projects. If the action plan gets the go ahead from councillors it will provide the next step as we look to continue the regeneration of West Dunbartonshire. There are a number of priority projects which have been identified and should councillors approve the action plan the council and its partners will be looking to start discussions on these in the near future.”
