Tilbury Douglas Group CEO Paul Gandy is to step down and be replaced by Craig Tatton, the group has revealed.

Mr Gandy will remain in post until 1 November 2024 as he prepares to take up his new role as the 122nd president of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).

He joined the Tilbury Douglas Group as CEO in 2019, initially leading the group through significant restructuring to reposition and firmly establish the business as a successful standalone Tier 1 contractor.

Drawing on four decades of industry experience behind him, Paul tightly refocused the group’s strategy, as well as strengthening governance to create transparency and rigour. Moving forward, Paul has agreed to continue as a part-time advisor to the Tilbury Douglas board.

Paul Gandy noted: “It has been a real privilege to have led the turnaround of Tilbury Douglas and have seen the business growing again from a solid foundation. I thank all my colleagues, our board and our shareholders for their hard work and encouragement during that time.”

New CEO Craig Tatton joined the group in 2017, leading the Regional Building businesses, before taking on wider responsibilities for Fit-out, Engineering and Infrastructure and, in 2022, stepping up to the role of group chief operating officer in preparation for this transition. His leadership and example have been instrumental in developing the capability and consistent success of the business.

Craig Tatton said: “Our business is poised and ready for its next phase, steadily broadening our portfolio of services for customers, whilst working alongside our suppliers, to enable growth of careers, profits and cash. People matter and I am proud that at Tilbury Douglas we remain committed not only to everyone’s safety and health but to sustainable contributions within the communities we serve.”

Nicholas Pollard, chair of Tilbury Douglas Group, added: “I am delighted that the strength and depth built in our executive team has enabled this smooth transition. Industry knowledge, understanding of people and passion for construction combine to provide consistent direction and credible leadership throughout our company.

“Paul’s new role as the Chartered Institute of Building president will enable him to lead on a broader platform to the benefit of our industry sector and national infrastructure, whilst as CEO, Craig and his colleagues will continue leading Tilbury Douglas from strength to strength. Working together with Craig and the board, I look forward to a bright future.”

In 2024, Tilbury Douglas celebrated its 140th anniversary. In 2023, it marked a successful first full year as a standalone major contractor and engineering business with revenue of £507.2 million and growth of 25% on 2022.
