Design team commissioned for Govanhill Baths restoration

Hall Black Douglas Architects along with engineer Arup has been appointed to the refurbishment project to transform the Edwardian Govanhill bathhouse in Glasgow into a ‘community wellbeing centre’.

This phase of the refurbishment will see the whole building repaired and the reinstatement of two of the three swimming pools, saunas and Turkish baths and fitness suite.

Funding has allowed the Govanhill Baths Community Trust (GBCT) to move ahead with its plans after a 15-year campaign against the council’s decision to close the building in 2001.

Arup will work with Hall Black Douglas and Govanhill Baths Community Trust, providing structural, mechanical, electrical, and public health engineering services.

Alastair Coey Architects will act as conservation specialists, drawing up a conservation management plan and coordinating specification of the restoration works.

“After 15 years of campaigning, Govanhill Baths Community Trust is delighted that the local community will be swimming again in the historic Govanhill Baths,” said Alan Walsh, chair of the Govanhill Baths Community Trust.

“The refurbishment of the 100 year old Edwardian building into a wellbeing centre will help address the many health statistics in the area, which are some of the worst in the country. This is a good day for the local community and a good day for our beloved Govanhill Baths.”
