Permission has already been given for the Barlinnie replacement to be built at the former Provanmill Gas Works on Royston Road but consent is still needed for detailed aspects.
Designs for the five major cell blocks at the jail were approved at the end of last year, and a further application for other structures has now been lodged.
These include the main front-of-house buildings and ancillary, non-houseblock accommodation such as the central facilities building, together with two small accommodation blocks, the additional care unit and care support unit. Landscaping proposals are also included.
The two-storey front-of-house complex will face Royston Road and is the main entrance point for public visits. It will include a visitor and community café and garden area.
There will be a bridge link from it to the secure zone beyond the security wall.
In a design statement, the architects wrote: “The Front of House building, given its direct association with Royston Road, and its function as a community facility, requires a high quality, civic presence, with an open and welcoming appearance. The two-storey façade directly facing the entrance plaza allows a balance between appropriate scale and impact, a sensitive human scale.
“The prominence of the house blocks from the transient viewpoints on the M8 motorway are of particular importance. The approach to materials and colour refers directly to the character and materiality of traditional and contemporary urban housing, such as tenements and mid-rise apartments.”
