Custom House in Dundee has been launched to market just over a year after being sold to a developer which planned to restore the city landmark.

Located in the heart of the Waterfront, the Grade A-listed Georgian mansion was put on the market in the summer of 2019 after Apex Hotels dropped plans to turn the 1840s structure into a boutique hotel.

The former headquarters of the city’s Port Authority was then sold as a potential residential development to Alicydon Limited.

The developer teamed up with JM Architects to progress plans for a block of 20 flats, with two new blocks totalling 29 properties to be built alongside. These proposals were given approval by Dundee City Council in October.

Launching the property to the market once again, Savills said Custom House offers a unique residential conversion and new build development opportunity for 49 high quality apartments. The 0.94-acre site comprises Custom House and the adjacent car parking area, and benefits from both the existing planning permission and listed building consent.

Custom House was constructed to the plans of architects John Taylor and James Leslie from 1842. The original sandstone building was designed in the neo-classical style and includes Greek Revival detailing, with additions being made in the 1880s and 1930s. The property retains a wealth of historic internal features including fireplaces, oak panelling, staircases and a plastered entrance vestibule hall.

Richard Cottingham of Savills said: “Custom House provides a rare opportunity to acquire a landmark building within Dundee’s Waterfront. Whilst of historical significance, it is also a key element of the continuing regeneration of the city centre given its prominent position close to the prestigious V&A Dundee. Its central location, waterside views and approved Planning Permission all combine to create an attractive residential development opportunity.”
