Edinburgh approves £120m Fountainbridge masterplan
Michael Laird Architects’ proposed £120 million masterplan for the Fountainbridge area has been approved by the City of Edinburgh Council.
The proposal considers the development of 9,650msq of land which currently separates the new Fountainbridge master plan site with the existing development at Edinburgh Quay.
The key city regeneration project offers a real opportunity for sustainable civic and commercial investment into a major brown-field site which will create a long-term, sustainable mixed- use development in a unique canal-side environment.
Michael Laird Architects said the masterplan seeks to complement and work with the principles adopted by the surrounding existing and proposed developments. In particular it seeks to dovetail into the Fountainbridge master plan and successfully complete the urban jigsaw to provide a framework for development in this part of the city.
Michael Laird Architects has also been granted planning approval for its £35m Urban Villa waterside project (on behalf of Union Hanover) adjacent to the Union Canal basin in Fountainbridge.
The practice worked in close collaboration with the New York-based architect Grzywinski+Pons on the Freer Street site to deliver a strong, modern architectural identity that reflects the typology of the building and references contextual materials. This project is a major new development for the area and a catalyst for the development of this important city centre site.
The 180 all-suites unit consists of studios, one bedroom units and four luxury rooftop penthouses.
