The flats will comprise 1, 2, 3 and 4-bedroom apartments for social rent and be created at the corner of Nimmo Drive and Elderpark Street - right in the heart of the Association’s community.

This week Elderpark Housing hailed the news as “another example of a community-based housing association seeking to deliver much-needed new homes despite the challenging economic environment”.

It also praised Glasgow City Council’s decision to award significant grant funding to make the development possible. Work is expected to begin in the summer and will take up to 18 months to complete.

The homes will be built in two blocks of flats by the developer The JR Group who have a strong affinity with Govan. The firm’s managing director, John Horne, was born and bred around the corner from where the new homes will be situated.

The business is also strongly committed to working within the social housing sector. Two existing buildings will be demolished to make way for the homes - a former ventilation business and the existing Elderpark Community Centre which, because of its structure, has reached the end of its useful life. Pivotal in the decision to demolish the community centre was ensuring that there would be a suitable future space for the existing organisations who have used it for many years.

For some time now Glasgow City Council and Glasgow Life in partnership with the housing association have been working to significantly refurbish and modernise historic Elderpark Library into a community hub.

Work is nearing completion and the community can expect a state-of-the-art facility which will be a worthy successor to the existing centre.

Announcing the new homes, Elderpark chief executive, Gary Dalziel, said: “We are pleased that the strong financial support from Glasgow City Council will allow us to work with The JR Group, MAST architects and others to bring 43 new homes to the heart of our community. These high-quality flats being built on the site of the community centre and adjacent industrial unit will meet the needs of many already living within our community and we look forward to work starting on these in the next few months.”

Councillor Kenny McLean, convener for housing and development at Glasgow City Council, added: “It is pleasing to see more new housing in Govan with beginning of work on these high-quality homes for social rent from Elderpark Housing Association. The range of sizes of these flats is all the more welcome as they can meet the needs of a range of people and families, and we were pleased to support the housing association with this project.”
