Fife to host permanent national Building Standards Hub
Fife Council is to establish a permanent national Building Standards Hub following a successful trial.
The Scottish Government has been working in partnership with Local Authority Building Standards Scotland and Fife Council to set up a permanent home for the hub, which was established in May 2022.
The move was approved by a Fife Council committee this week.
Working with local authority building standards teams, the hub is supporting transformation, quality, and consistency in building standards services across Scotland. It will do this by providing a range of building standards system services and by supporting learning and development in the sector.
The Building Standards Hub will also operate and manage specific hubs of expertise and provide specialist advice in areas including fire engineering, structural engineering, environmental and energy. These hubs will facilitate and pull together panels of expertise from both industry and the public sector to look at matters of national interest to establish consistent positions.
The Hub will be funded by the building warrant fees meaning that those who use the building standards system will support and benefit from improvements in service delivery.
Building standards minister Patrick Harvie said: “Buildings in Scotland need to provide high quality, safe and environmentally sustainable places for people to live and work in. Building standards have a critical role in making sure new buildings meet the standards we expect.
“Following the successful trial of the Building Standards Hub I am pleased to confirm that there will now be a permanent Hub based within Fife Council to provide services, advice and learning and development opportunities for the construction sector across Scotland.
“The permanent Hub within Fife will deliver an important service to improve and strengthen building standards across the country.
“The Hub has already shown, through the trial period, its ability to provide a high standard of service and I look forward to seeing it deliver across the country.”
