Final approval given for £50m Largs Campus

Largs CampusConstruction work on a £50 million school in Largs can official begin after the new facility cleared a final planning hurdle yesterday.

North Ayrshire Council approved the proposals following a pre-determination meeting was held to give objectors and all stakeholders involved in the process a chance to make representation.

Councillors were able to ask questions to all of Wednesday’s speakers before confirming their consent for the proposals in the afternoon.

It now means that Largs and schools within the cluster area will have a new, modern and fit-for-purpose facility.

The Largs campus will accommodate a relocated Largs Academy, along with a relocated St Mary’s RC Primary School and amalgamated Brisbane and Kelburn Primary School. It will also be the base for a new early years centre.

The ongoing partnership with sportscotland means the young people will also have access to some of their top-class sporting facilities.

The new campus is scheduled to open in 2018 and will be built on the site next to sportscotland’s Inverclyde base.

Morrison Construction was named as the preferred contractor to build the facility in December with work due to start over the next few months.

Speaking after the meeting, Councillor John Bruce, cabinet member for education, attainment and achievement, said: “This is a fantastic day for Largs and the cluster area.

“It has taken a lot of work just to get to this stage and I’m delighted so many people have been engaged throughout the consultation process. I’ve spoken to many parents and every one of them is excited about the opportunities the new school will bring for their children.

“We are making massive strides in terms of our educational attainment and facilities like this one, and the one being developed in the Garnock Valley, will only help our young people realise their potential.

“As a former teacher myself, I would love to have worked with the young people in such modern and ambitious facilities. These type of schools can only heighten their capacity for learning.

“The Largs Campus supports the council’s vision that North Ayrshire’s young people will get every opportunity to attain, achieve and develop the skills necessary to live positive and fulfilling lives.”
