Final new council homes handed over in Maidenhill

East Renfrewshire Council has reached the final stage in the handover of 105 houses within Cala Homes (West) Newton Mearns development, providing new homes for 246 council tenants.

The new homes included 36 one-bedroom flats, as well as 37 two-bedroom, 26 three-bedroom and 6 four-bedroom houses.

The project represents an investment of more than £19 million, with funding from Scottish Government grants, developer contributions and the council’s own capital investment, and follows on from the successful delivery of 96 affordable homes in Maidenhill through Taylor Wimpey and Robertson Homes in recent years.

The high-quality properties benefit from solar panels, helping to keep tenant’s energy bills low, and a water mist system, which is fitted in all rooms and is independently set off when excessive heat is detected.

Tenants have been moving into the properties since autumn last year, including Linda Ireland and her family who have recently moved into a four-bed property from a smaller two-bed they’d been in for over 15 years. Housing and Environment Convener, Councillor Danny Devlin, went to visit her and find out how they are getting on in their new home.

Linda said: “I couldn’t believe it when I got the call inviting me in to discuss moving into this home. We’d been on the list for a bigger house for a long time - my daughters shared a room and often stayed with their gran, just to get their own space. So now we’re all under the one roof, in this amazing new home and everyone is really happy.”

Housing and environment convener, Councillor Danny Devlin, added: “I’m delighted that we’ve provided people like Linda with such high-quality flats and houses. East Renfrewshire remains an extremely popular place to live, and we know that more people than ever are in need of a permanent place to call home, so it’s extremely important that we do all we can to create more social housing in the area. This development reflects our ongoing commitment to the people of East Renfrewshire. I’d like to wish Linda and her family all the best in their new home and thank Cala Homes (West) for the work undertaken here in Newton Mearns.”
