A charity on the Isle of Bute has celebrated a financial windfall thanks to a sponsored head shave undertaken by City Gate Construction’s Angie McGuire.

Angie raised £1200 for Calum’s Cabin by getting her head shaved. Just like the scissors she made short work of her target of £500 by more than doubling the amount raised.

The money will soon be on its way to the charity which provides respite care for families with a child fighting cancer.

Family members helped complete the shave and friends and colleagues also poured money into the fundraising drive.

Calum’s Cabin is a popular holiday retreat for children suffering from cancer and is the lasting legacy of inspirational young Calum Speirs who died in 2007.

The youngster, aged 12, had been bravely fighting an inoperable brain tumour and his untimely death caused incalculable sadness in Rothesay and across Bute.

His outstanding parents Caroline and Duncan and his twin sister Jenna set up Calum’s Cabin – which was Calum’s idea - so that it could help other children.

The stunning Cabin is now a place of rest and relaxation for children and their parents who even have their ferry fares from Wemyss Bay to Rothesay paid for them in what is an entirely free break.

Angie who is the transport manager for CGC based in MacDowall Street, Paisley, chose the charity because of its efforts to help other families.

Angie said: “What Caroline, Duncan and Jenna Speirs have done is to bring kindness and care to families they don’t even know – all of which is done in Calum’s memory.

“The Isle of Bute is a tranquil, lovely place and a week spent there for families whose child is seriously unwell ensures they go home with irreplaceable memories.

“The head shave itself was good fun but it is after all winter when it was done and it was a bit chilly! I’m very grateful to everyone who contributed to the fund raising.”
