A new bridge is being built over the burn at Carnoustie’s 18th hole – one of the most famous water hazards in golf.

The new bridge is being installed at the rear of the white tee on the hole while the burn is being widened in front of Hogan tee to alleviate flooding.

The burn snakes round to in front of the 18th green of the Championship Course, scene of one of the most infamous meltdowns in golf history.

Needing just a six to win the 1999 Open, Frenchman Jean Van De Velde ended up carding a seven before losing the subsequent play-off to Paul Lawrie.

Carnoustie will host the Open for the eighth time in 2018.
