Financial close achieved for revamp of Campsie Memorial Hall

Plans for the refurbishment of Campsie Memorial Hall in Lennoxtown took a significant step forward this week as the partners involved in the £2.279 million project achieved financial close.

The milestone was reached between East Dunbartonshire Council, development partner hub West Scotland and main contractor Linear Design and Construct for the revamp of the much-loved venue in the heart of the town.

Located on Main Street, this project will involve the extensive refurbishment and restoration of the existing Victorian building to create a state-of-the-art facility that will accommodate a number of regular community groups and clubs.

The hall will close its doors to the public on Monday 14 April to allow for a decant before extensive internal and external works begin in May. Completion is scheduled for early 2026.

The development of Campsie Memorial Hall is exciting news for Lennoxtown and marks a major investment in the town centre by the council.

Council leader Gordan Low said: “The Hall is a well-established local asset, and I am delighted this very exciting project is going ahead.

“The Campsie Memorial Hall Revitalisation Project will breathe new life into the building through an extensive refurbishment. The Hall has a special place in people’s hearts, and the improvements delivered by this project will ensure that it is used to its full potential over the coming years.

“The transformation will introduce an innovative extension to provide an attractive and welcoming frontage to Main Street. Internally, the Hall will be reconfigured to provide flexible activity spaces all on one level to promote greater accessibility and inclusion. Outside, there will be enhanced landscaping, seating and bike facilities to complement the revamped indoor space.”

Iain Marley, chief executive at hub West Scotland, added: “Hub West Scotland are delighted that Financial Close has been achieved for the refurbishment of Campsie Memorial Hall.

“The existing building, dating from 1866, will be upgraded to improve thermal performance and accessibility whilst delivering a modernised facility in the heart of the community for the Campsie Memorial Hall Trust. We are also pleased the project has created new employment and will deliver 36 weeks of construction related training.

“Our thanks go to the project team of Linear Design & Construct, ECD Architects, Narro Associates, Hawthorn Boyle and Armour Construction Consultants for their efforts in achieving this important milestone.”

Ryan Broadley, managing director at Linear Design & Construct, commented: “We’re pleased to have reached this important milestone in the project. We’re delighted to be working once again with hub West Scotland and East Dunbartonshire Council, and we’re looking forward to getting started on site and bringing the project to life.”

The project was awarded £950,000 funding from the Scottish Government Regeneration Capital Grant Fund. This was added to £1.329m from the council’s Capital Programme.

Catherine Drummond, chair of the Campsie Memorial Hall Trust (CMHT) welcomed the news. She said: “The trustees are delighted that after 15 years of dedication and commitment, that Campsie Memorial Hall will see a huge transformation and become vibrant, comfortable and accessible.

“We will retain many features in the hall, but it will be a more appealing building for people to use for groups/activities, parties and events as we continue to oversee the day-to-day running of the building.

“This has been one of our goals since we accepted community ownership and are excited that we have achieved this on behalf of the community.”

The Campsie Memorial Trust was set up by volunteers from Lennoxtown to manage the Hall on behalf of the whole community. The Hall was transferred to the CMHT on a 99-year lease by the Council in 2012.
