First new-build distillery opens in Cairngorms National Park
Works on the first new-build distillery in the Cairngorms National Park have been completed and the project has been handed over to owners Gordon & MacPhail.
Nestled on the bank of the river Spey, The Cairn distillery has been designed to reflect its environment. The design has been inspired by the National Park it resides in with features such as a green roof and earth mounding. Whisky will be distilled on site, which also includes a visitor centre, bistro and bar area.
Multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy Cundall has been involved in the project from the very early stages and has provided civil, structural, geotechnical and building services
engineering, as well as transportation and sustainability consulting.
Managing director at Gordon & MacPhail, Ewen Mackintosh, explained: “After many years of preparation, planning and construction we are proud to finally be opening the doors to members of the public, and in particular the local community, who have been so supportive since the project was first announced.
“Having secured such a beautiful and awe-inspiring location overlooking the River Spey towards the Cairngorms, we wanted to create a building which complements the majesty of the environment. We are delighted with the result, and we look forward to sharing it with visitors from all over the world.”
Neil Dely, partner at Cundall, said: “Cundall has delivered appropriate and considered engineering solutions by working closely with Gordon & MacPhail. The result is an exemplar distillery and visitor experience in a stunning location. This has been a memorable project for the whole team to be involved with.”
The distillery opened on 18 October 2022.
