Fleming Timber Structures has secured three new contract wins spanning education, sport and funeral care projects for a variety of main contractors across Scotland.

The firm is partnering again with Morrison Construction as it delivers the £18.5 million contract to build the new Whitecraig Primary School in East Lothian.

With the area enjoying a significant increase in population as a result of several new housing developments, the original school - first erected in 1959 - will be replaced with a new building, featuring eight classrooms and a nursery/early learning facility. Additionally, the project will feature a dedicated community entrance and improved pedestrian cycling safety measures, to account for increased traffic.

Fleming Timber Structures is providing an optimised structural solution incorporating timber frame panels, floor and roof cassettes, along with some impressive glulam beams which are over 15m in length.

Work got underway in spring this year.

Situated within greenspace north of Bishopbriggs, Fleming’s work with Luddon Construction will see the creation of the new Bishopbriggs Crematorium and associated development.

The design takes full advantage of the generous space within the location to erect offices, car parking, a new access road, and a landscaped garden of remembrance- all designed to improve the quality of service and overall customer experience.

The building itself comprises four linked elements; the entrance, waiting room and public toilets; the main chapel building; the facility offices and the cremator room. Externally, a new three-arm roundabout will be constructed along with a new access road, a new drainage scheme, installation of two new bus stops on the western and southern arms of the roundabout, new footways, signage and kerbing.

Fleming said the design and approach have been continually refined with bespoke feature glulam trusses, engineered timber roof cassettes. Given the size of the glulam trusses, these were designed and manufactured in the firm’s onsite factory and then transported to the site for installation.

Remaining idle since its use as a balloon barrage site during World War II, the project is expected to conclude in Winter 2024.

Also in East Dunbartonshire, Fleming will be supplying a full timber frame structural solution for the walls and roof to create a high-performance thermal envelope as part of its work to breathe new life into Twechar Outdoor Pursuits Centre. Working in collaboration with Morgan Sindall, the space will act as a hub for a variety of activities including cycling, kayaking, and canoeing.

Built on previously derelict ground and touted as a space for all ages, the centre will also function as a space for volunteering, education, and training.
