A public consultation has identified the need for a full redesign of the street with improved surfaces, reduced clutter and new seating to create a more pleasant environment for pedestrians and cyclists while improving access to the University of Glasgow.

Architecture firm Benton Scott-Simmons has been appointed to lead a design team and will undertake a series of community consultations from 23 February at Hillhead Library.

Construction work is expected to begin in late 2018.

Councillor Frank McAveety, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “Byres Road is a jewel in the crown of Glasgow’s economic and social life, attracting visitors from Glasgow and beyond to its attractions during the day and at night. This consultation process will help to ensure that it remains in this position by informing how best to shape the Byres Road that everyone with an interest in the area wants, and I would urge all stakeholders to participate.”
