Glasgow development map launched at MIPIM
A property development pipeline map of Glasgow city centre has been launched at today at the MIPIM property market event in Cannes.
The map, issued by commercial property advisors Bilfinger GVA, summarises the key opportunities in the city centre for development as well as the peripheral areas around Glasgow.
These areas are set for major improvement and economic growth under the recently announced City Deal with BGVA endorsing these proposals as well today.
Alison Taylor, head of Business Space Scotland at Bilfinger GVA, is attending MIPIM and is supporting Glasgow City Council and Invest Glasgow teams in promoting investment and development opportunities in the city.
She said: “This is extremely important in order to stimulate new investment in both the creation of new buildings and the refurbishment of existing ones. We require buildings of the future for the occupiers of the future. Investment in property is required to allow Glasgow to compete in a European context for world class jobs.
“While some people are somewhat risk-averse at the moment for macro-economic reasons, this is actually an opportune time for developers, in particular, looking to invest in Glasgow. There is a strong level of demand for Grade A office space in a climate where we are heading towards a supply shortage. The growing trend for alternative uses for existing buildings in the city centre such as hotels and student accommodation has exacerbated the pressure on stock while space available in recently completed developments has been snapped up quickly.”
Taylor believes that this situation may see more companies looking to take space in peripheral business park developments. On the back of the recent Glasgow City Deal, the council will also be promoting the various projects benefiting including the Clyde Gateway Regeneration Area, public realm works around the city centre, Glasgow Harbour, Collegelands and the Glasgow Airport Investment Area.
Taylor said that the council’s presence in Cannes is important not just to promote Glasgow as a place to invest, but to also support all those working in the city’s property industry including surveyors, engineers, architects, lawyers and construction workers.
She added: “Representatives from cities all over the world attend this singular most important property event at MIPIM so it’s hugely important that the council is in Cannes to promote Glasgow and highlight the opportunities in the city. As part of the City Deal there will be significant investment in improving the city’s environment, connectivity and drive towards a low carbon economy so I consider the presence of the council and the Invest Glasgow teams hugely important to illustrate the city’s friendly ‘can do’ attitude as after all the city’s slogan is: People Make Glasgow.”
