Glasgow landmark to become hub for entrepreneurial start-ups

TontinePlans have been unveiled to transform Glasgow’s Tontine Building into a high-tech space for up to 300 entrepreneurs in a £1.67 million project.

Inspired by Google’s offices, the project is a key part of the £1.13 billion Glasgow and Clyde Valley City Deal and is expected to inject £53 million into the local economy over the next five years when it formally opens in May.

Designed to inspire the 135 aspirational businesses expected to use the facility, its features will include a mix of small informal meeting booths, boardrooms, workshop areas and presentation spaces.

Key sectors to be targeted include enabling technologies, advanced design and manufacturing and creative industries.

Frank McAveety, leader of Glasgow City Council and chair of the Glasgow and Clyde Valley City Deal Cabinet, said: “The ambitious programme will support some of Glasgow’s key economic sectors and help grow resilient and innovative enterprises.

“This approach builds on the council’s support for growing businesses and a recognition that young businesses often encounter stresses and bumps in the road as they develop.

“The new business acceleration space and innovation hub at the Tontine will offer high quality flexible office space and meeting spaces and board rooms tailored for the requirements of growing businesses.

“The space has been designed to reflect the needs and attitudes of young businesses drawing on the designs of Google’s offices. It offers high level of IT infrastructure which will allow entrepreneurs to rent a space, plug in and go.”
