Glasgow project joins ‘exemplary’ shortlist for top UK planning award

New Social Housing at Laurieston 4The Laurieston Transformational Regeneration Area has been named as one of six housing projects across the UK to compete for the Royal Town Planning Institute’s (RTPI) prestigious planning awards this year.

Delivering 459 new homes to a 13 hectare regeneration site in the Gorbals, the project joins another 60 finalists which will compete in 13 categories that celebrate excellence in projects, consultancies and local authority teams.

They have been recognised for their high standards in planning and demonstrate how significant schemes can be delivered speedily through the planning and other consents systems.

The other projects in the housing category are:



  • Chelmsford City Park West mixed-use redevelopment– located on the former Anglia Ruskin University Central Campus and includes the restoration of historical buildings for 219 dwellings, commercial space and a food store
  • North West Cambridge Development– development at Cambridge University for 3,000 new homes, research and teaching facilities, community facilities and public open space on a 150 hectare site
  • Hitchin Square, Parkside Housing Estate– regeneration of regeneration of 18 sites across Parkside Estate in Tower Hamlets


  • Allen Court Housing– redevelopment of a 60s housing estate in Ealing to provide 89 homes
  • Plymouth City Council’s Plan for Homesaims to ambitiously deliver 5,000 new homes over five years
  • Leigh Road Care Home- a bespoke designed specialist housing project for young adults with learning difficulties to encourage independent living, located in Islington, north London.


  • Phil Williams, President of the Royal Town Planning Institute, said: “The finalists highlight outstanding examples of planning that have made a positive impact on the local community and environment. The judges will find it difficult separating the finalists and choosing winners given the high calibre of entries this year.”

    Finalists have been recognised for their national contribution to planning and demonstrate how significant schemes can be delivered speedily through the planning and other consents systems. The RTPI Awards for Planning Excellence comprises two parts, awards for projects and awards for people.

    The Awards ceremony will be held at Milton Court at The Barbican, London on 5 May 2016.
