Plans for Glasgow’s fire-hit ABC venue to be demolished

The O2 ABC in Glasgow which sustained substantial damage in the Glasgow School of Art fire last year is set to be demolished under new plans.

The popular nightclub, music venue and former cinema on Sauchiehall Street was ravaged by a fire that tore through part of the Glasgow School of Art last June.

The art school’s adjacent Mackintosh Building, which was undergoing a £35 million restoration following a blaze in 2014, was also destroyed.

An application has now been submitted to Glasgow City Council to demolish the “extensively fire damaged building in entirety”.

The building warrant application was submitted on Thursday January 31 and is pending consideration.

The ABC has been home to an ice rink, circus, and cinema since its construction in 1875.

A petition on change.org calling for the venue to be saved has so far received more than 4,000  signatures.
