Glasshouse plan drawn up to kick-start Finnieston economy

A £1 million glasshouse could be erected over a section of Glasgow’s Argyle Street to create an outdoor dining experience and help kick-start the local economy.

The all-weather structure would banish traffic from the thoroughfare and give bars and restaurants additional space to re-open under social distancing measures.

Provisionally dubbed ‘Finnieston Green’, the glazed pavilion extends from Kelvingrove Street to Derby Street - retaining the current pavements for pedestrian and services access.

The plans are being spearheaded by architect John Macleod, owner of the Crabshakk restaurant, who hopes to have the project in place by late summer or early autumn.

In an open letter to Glasgow City Council calling for a hearing, Mr MacLeod wrote: “To see the area lying empty with no prospect of re-opening and the very real danger of some not opening at all, is heartbreaking.

“It seems 21st-century virus events may be cyclical and we have only now been exposed to the beginning of potentially a very different world ahead. The climate crisis will be knocking on the door in due course so new solutions and contingencies may well be the order of the day.”
