GRAHAM upskills sector with £500,000 worth of training courses
Construction firm GRAHAM said it has reinforced its commitment to the Scottish sector after successfully providing almost £500,000 of fully-funded training courses to supply chain partners alongside its own employees.
The company, which is currently working on Raigmore Hospital’s critical services upgrade project, has helped 92 employees of companies within its supply chain to access training SVQ qualifications which range from HNC to Masters level.
It has also enabled 35 of its internal employees to complete training courses – which give them lifelong qualifications valid on any construction site in Scotland.
One such company is Aberdeen based window fabricator and installer Crest Glazing which employs around 48 staff. Working in partnership with GRAHAM to install windows as part of the Raigmore Hospital redevelopment project, 11 of its team have so far gained access to training - earning Level 6 SVQs in Occupational Work Supervision. GRAHAM has also committed to extend its support to Crest’s domestic supply department.
David Scott, managing director of Crest Glazing, said: “Being able to undertake this type of training has been a game-changer for our team – many of who haven’t completed any formal qualifications since leaving school or college. The training is structured around on-site assessment, cutting out the need for any overly complicated written exams or essays which has helped to encourage uptake. I’m also really pleased GRAHAM has pledged its support to other divisions of the company – even though housebuilding is not currently its area of focus.”
GRAHAM works with AVQ Management to deliver the training and is fully committed to upskilling all of its supply chain partners.
Debbie Rutherford, community benefits advisor at GRAHAM, said: “Promotion of industry skills is an important goal for GRAHAM, benefiting not only our own operation but the overall construction sector across Scotland.
“This type of training presents many benefits from employees as well as employers, helping to develop a knowledgeable workforce which can deliver complex projects quickly and professionally.”
All of the qualifications were delivered in partnership with training provider AVQ Management and Skills Development Scotland.
Anne Queen, managing director of AVQ Management Ltd, said: “AVQ Management are delighted to have supported Crest Glazing in delivering these highly regarded qualifications. GRAHAM is continually recommending training opportunities to members of its supply chain and encouraging them to put employees forward. Crest was very pro-active in contacting us and encouraging their team as they progressed through the awards – they were a pleasure to work with.”
GRAHAM is an IIP Platinum 2020 accredited company that employs over 300 people in Scotland and has managed over 150 apprenticeships. The company is also signed up to the Scottish Business Pledge.
