A series of events which gives residents the chance to look through the keyhole at some of Scotland’s most inspirational green homes is to continue in Midlothian and Kinross next weekend.

The ‘Green Designs’ open doors events showcase a selection of properties on the Green Homes Network, which is managed by the Energy Saving Trust.

Kinross couple Iain and Cora McDonald and Midlothian resident Mr David Bathgate will open their doors to the public on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 September respectively.

Visitors can look around, chat to the owner about their experiences, and get specialist advice about energy efficiency and renewable technology for their own property from Home Energy Scotland.

The homes taking part across Scotland this year include sustainable new builds, unique eco-homes and historic properties that have been modernised with green technology.

Mr Bathgate’s beautiful farmhouse, featuring solar panels, enhanced insulation, a wood-burning stove and biomass heating, definitely has the ‘wow factor’. Their journey has seen them develop their home’s green credentials over several years, starting in 2009.

David said: “We have always been interested in issues relating to sustainability and the environment, so it made sense to us to improve our home in this way.

“Although we haven’t calculated how much money we have saved by making these improvements, we know it has made a difference and we can take comfort in knowing that we are doing our bit to improve the sustainability of our planet for future generations.”

The McDonalds’ aspirational architect-designed home featuring a host of complementary technologies including an air-to-water heat pump, solar thermal and solar voltaic systems and a multifuel stove, definitely has the ‘wow factor’.

Iain said: “We love its open plan, light and airy spaces and the atrium makes the garden feel like it’s part of the living space. The surrounding Ochil Hills, River Devon and countryside create a beautiful environment – it’s wonderful to be surrounded by nature.

“I have always been interested in environmental issues and strongly believe we have a responsibility to steward the earth’s resources, but unfortunately we aren’t. By improving the efficiency of our home and reducing consumption we can live more economically without costing the planet.”

Anthony Kyriakides, renewables manager at the Energy Saving Trust in Scotland, added: “Mr Bathgate and the McDonalds are great ambassadors for the Green Homes Network and will be more than happy to share helpful and honest insights with everyone who visits. What’s more, they will show that all homes no matter how big, small, new or old can be made greener, more comfortable and cheaper to run.”
