Councillors have unanimously granted planning permission to an application to deliver five blocks of affordable flats on the site of a former Perth hospital.

Applicant First Endeavour LLP and Yeoman McAllister Architects had proposed 72 new flats across four-storey blocks on land which formed part of the former Hillside Hospital on Dundee Road.

The flats will be developed in partnership with Hillcrest, which will manage the accommodation. It will be subject to a Section 75 legal agreement to ensure the development remains 100 per cent affordable housing.

Potential features of the blocks include solar panels on the roof, ground source heat pumps and high-spec windows. 72 parking spaces will also be provided.

It is also hoped the development might improve connections to the city centre by making the rail bridge footpath more accessible.

The former Hillside Hospital on Dundee Road was closed in 1997 and has since been demolished.

Plans to build a care home on the northern part of the site were approved back in 2021. However, work is yet to begin and the land was sold in 2022.

The planning statement said that these plans are now “unlikely” to go ahead due to new regulations from the Care Inspectorate.

The application had been recommended for approval when it went before Perth and Kinross Council’s planning and placemaking committee on Wednesday.

The newly approved plans are for the southern part of the site.
