Green light for flats conversion of former Giffnock care home

East Renfrewshire Council has approved plans to transform a former Giffnock care home into flats and build more homes on its grounds.

Westpoint Homes’ proposal for the Eastwoodhill Eventide Home on Fenwick Road had been recommended for approval by East Renfrewshire planners.

Members of the council’s planning committee then gave their approval of the plan, which will see some unlisted buildings and an extension to the listed home demolished.

The old home will become four flats, with a further 52 properties in four new ‘villas’. In total, there will be 13 two-bedroom flats and 43 three-bedroom flats across the development.

The developer’s offer to pay a sum of money “in lieu of on-site provision of affordable housing” has been agreed with the council’s contributions officer.

Recommending the application for approval, council officers concluded: “The proposed new build development on an existing brownfield site is acceptable in principle and is in keeping with the character of the wider area.

“It is considered that the proposed development, by virtue of its design and location of the new build development, roads and car parking is acceptable in term of its impact on the setting and character of the listed building.”

An application for a similar development on the site was withdrawn in January last year.
