Hampden to get £14m upgrade if 2028 tournament bid succeeds

Up to £14 million could be invested in Hampden Park if the UK and Ireland win a joint bid to host the 2028 European Championships.

Glasgow council officials shared the figure with councillors ahead of next year’s decision on the tournament. If the UK and Ireland succeed, six matches are expected to take place in Glasgow.

Councillors agreed on Thursday to spend £7.5 million on the delivery of the event, the BBC reports.

Baillie Annette Christie also told the meeting: “Some of the things we are looking at are significant investment in Hampden itself to make it a more attractive venue to help with bringing future events to the city.”

Hampden, originally opened in 1903, was significantly redeveloped in the 1990s. There have been growing calls in recent years for a fresh upgrade.
