Hotel plan approved for disused Glasgow office building
International chain Yotel has secured planning consent to convert a disused office building on Glasgow’s Argyle Street into a new ‘cabin’ hotel.
Following a similar conversion on Edinburgh’s Princes Street, the redevelopment will see Westergate House gaining a new feature entrance off Hope Street, close to Glasgow Central Station and the creation of a gym, bowling alley and rooftop bar and restaurant.
Plans by Mosaic Architecture + Design call for the addition of full height glazing at both first and seventh floors as well as creation of a roof terrace and remodelled first floor canopy. A total of 256 guest ‘cabins’ will be slotted within the existing envelope with compact rooms modelled on ‘first-class air travel’ to entice guests through its doors.
One of the submitted planning documents reads: “The proposals constitute sustainable economic development, securing investment and jobs, while bring a prominent vacant property back into use to the benefit of the city centre.
“The hotel is expected to generate an estimated 100 jobs. Employment associated with the cafe bar and restaurant would be in addition to this number.”
Yotel anticipates an opening date for the hotel of late 2019.
