The work will involve widening sections of the existing paths to enable shared use for walking, wheeling and cycling and widening the pedestrian and cyclist crossings, including the roundabout island at Hamilton Road.

Essential repairs to the bus stop laybys on either side of West Hamilton Street will be carried out and the road resurfaced.

To allow the work to be carried out safely, temporary traffic and pedestrian management will be in place, including lane closures controlled by traffic lights.

Access to residential properties and service arrangements for commercial properties will be maintained throughout the works.

The bus stops will be temporarily closed and unavailable at different times during the work.

North Lanarkshire Council is carrying out the work as part of a wider project to create walking and cycling routes and crossings in the town centre between the recently improved Motherwell Rail Station and the new transport hub on Muir Street, the Civic Centre, Braidhurst Industrial Estate and Strathclyde Country Park.

This is designed to encourage a move to sustainable active travel for everyday journeys and improve access to opportunities and services for people who don’t have a car. It will also reduce congestion and improve air quality in Motherwell town centre.

The work is being funded by the Scottish Government’s Place-Based Investment Programme and the UK Government Shared Prosperity Fund.

The work is being carried out by JH Civil Engineering Ltd and is expected to be complete by early October.
