The international support services and construction group has been responsible for building, dismantling and storing the spectator seating at one of the world’s best-known military events since 2013.

Construction of the complex steel frame grandstands on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle is, however, only one part of the fast track 22-week programme of works, which this year began at the beginning of May.

In addition, Interserve will continue to manage three other key areas: the transportation and logistics of the grandstand elements from nearby Livingston where they are stored when not in use; the facilities management requirements of concerts in the run-up to the main Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and those of the event itself; and the dismantling of the grandstand and its transportation back to its storage space.

The contract showcases Interserve’s logistics expertise, since some 800 trucks are involved in making sure the right materials arrive on site at the right time during the construction and dismantling phases. With approximately 10,000 tourists per day visiting Edinburgh Castle, health and safety is absolutely paramount.

The company therefore operates the fleet of trucks early in the mornings, before the castle opens to the public, in order to minimise disruption or risk to those visitors and ensure business as usual for all the castle’s neighbours.

Designed as a permanent steel trussed structure and formally passed by the local council when completed, the grandstand features aluminium seating and decking. Interserve carries out complex safety checks of the structure both once built and when dismantled.

VIP and technical suites plus performer units in the form of cabins are also constructed by Interserve, together with approximately forty under-stand units including toilets and other facilities. As part of its contract, the company also provides facilities management services for the electrical and mechanical aspects of the run-up concerts and main event.
