Judges reveal winning tips in pursuit of the prize

Scottish Property Awards 2016 bannerAs Scotland’s key players in commercial property development prepare their nominations for the Scottish Property Awards 2016, judges in the programme have revealed their top tips to help secure a coveted winners’ trophy.

With 16 categories in the programme, including four new categories for property agency teams, competition is expected to be tough and judges have outlined their advice to help entrants compile a stand out entry.

Alasdair Humphery, lead director of Jones Lang LaSalle Scotland, identifies that overcoming adversity can often provide a winning formula.

He said: “It is subtly different for the various categories, but for me the more the entrant can demonstrate how they overcame challenges to produce a great result by working collaboratively then so much the better.”

However, perhaps establishing the basics first are important, as is stressed by Sarah Speirs, chair of RICS.

She added: “One thing that I look for is adherence to the guidelines in the application form. If it asks for details, then it is always helpful to provide that information.”

Meanwhile, Rufus Logan, director at BRE Scotland, said: “In a short paragraph tell the story and what makes the project special to you. Remember, highlight the key points that meet the criteria. To demonstrate sustainable approach it is worth considering the key factors the building has addressed and expressing this in terms of positive impact for the building’s occupiers.”

The judging panel will be chaired for the first time by Fiona Morton, chief executive of Millar & Bryce and former chairman of Ryden in Scotland. Her colleagues form a panel of experts from across the commercial property spectrum, who will gather in November to scrutinise entries, before announcing the finalists later in the month.

John Hamilton, CEO at Winchburgh Developments says once the basics are ticked off and everything you need to see is provided there is a final stand out which might come as a surprise.

“We’re supportive of having fun in business and we would encourage that element to come through in some submissions.”

How to enter:

Entering the Scottish Property Awards could not be easier. Entry is free and your written submission should be circa 1000 words and will be marked by the ability to address the guidelines in the entry guide.

Top tips to help you stand out from the competition:

  • Criteria: Check that your entry ticks all the boxes in terms of answering the criteria in each category you are entering.
  • Clarity: Keep your writing simple and concise. Include information which tells the story of your team or individual. A strong opening paragraph will help grab the attention of judges.

  • Presentation: The look and feel of your entry is important and judges will recognise effort in preparation and clear presentation.
  • Testimonials: Back up your entry with named client, supplier or staff testimonials, and don’t forget to include industry credentials.
  • Share your success: Enter more than one category so you spread the message across the judging panel.
  • Take time: Triple check your submission and supporting information. Make sure to proof-read your statements. Grammatical errors and spelling mistakes detract from the quality of the nomination.
  • The Scottish Property Awards finalists will be announced in November, following the judging panel’s deliberation. The winners will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony which takes place on Thursday 3rd March 2016 and will be held at The Glasgow City Hotel.

The deadline for entries is 15 October 2015. For further information please see www.scottishpropertyawards.co.uk.
