Anderson Bell + Christie founding partner Karen Anderson has formally commenced her term of office as president of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS).

The two-year stint got underway at the Annual General Meeting of the RIAS, which was held on Wednesday 26 June.

During her distinguished career in practice and architectural education, Karen Anderson has shared her skills and experience more widely – including as chair of Architecture and Design Scotland (A&DS) for two terms from 2010 to 2018, and more recently as founding partner of ‘hirta’ – a project to promote excellence in Scottish design and to support new and emerging designers.

Karen is also the chair of WASPS (Workshop & Artists Studio Provision Scotland) – a registered charity that provides studios to support artists, makers and creative industries.

Karen Anderson has served as the RIAS president-elect since May 2023 – the first person to hold this office following a change by the RIAS to its election procedures. This revised system is designed to provide for greater continuity, with incoming RIAS presidents given greater time to prepare for their term of office.

Karen Anderson takes over as president from Chris Stewart, who now continues to serve the RIAS as past president.

Karen Anderson, president of the RIAS, said: “I am really pleased to be the new President of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland, and am looking forward to working with all at RIAS, its regional Chapters, our members and partners across Scotland.

“I’m keen to build on the work of my predecessors in promoting the crucial role architecture plays in everyone’s lives. I want to ensure that the RIAS provides strong leadership in the built environment and promotes the vital importance of well-designed buildings and resilient places for the generations to come.”
