Key Stirling site opened up for development after council disposal
Stirling Council has agreed to dispose surplus land and assets in the Viewforth area enabling the development of around 150 new homes and associated infrastructure and green spaces.
The eight-hectare site is a key part of Stirling city centre and includes the land and assets in and around Old Viewforth (excluding the Old Viewforth building but including Langgarth House), as well as Burghmuir Road, Linden Avenue car park and the former Wellgreen Care Home.
Marketing of the land and assets will now commence with a report coming back to a future meeting of the council on the outcome of this process and a recommendation on the preferred bidder(s).
Future developments at the site will be guided by the new framework and planning brief for Viewforth and Burghmuir that was approved by the council following consultation.
The document, which takes account of the latest planning principles and climate and environmental considerations, outlines the vision for the area and how developments can make use of existing buildings and infrastructure, deliver new homes, enhance greenspaces and biodiversity and improve connectivity within Stirling.
Stirling Council leader, Cllr Margaret Brisley, said: “This is a major milestone in the redevelopment of a key part of Stirling city centre that has the potential to deliver high-quality new homes and a wide range of economic, social and environmental benefits.
“A comprehensive planning framework, which has been informed by feedback from residents and local communities, will ensure the history, heritage and natural landscape of the site are considered for any future developments.
“I look forward to seeing the proposals for the creation of a new vibrant and sustainable community that is better integrated into the city centre and enhances the appearance of the area.”
Langgarth House, which was subject to a fire on 30 March 2024, is included within the marketing of the site.
A final position on the status of the property at point of sale will be confirmed through consultation with both conservation and insurance specialists.
Old Viewforth will be retained for corporate and civic accommodation as part of the council’s corporate accommodation strategy.
