Procured through Frameworks Scotland 2, the Surgical Centre will provide a range of first-class facilities, including theatre suites, a surgical admissions and recovery unit (SARU), a surgical administration space, central sterilising and processing department facilities, endoscopy unit, orthopaedic amenities, outpatient and pre-operative spaces, as well as staff wellbeing spaces. When complete, the building will support the hospital to provide over 9,400 new outpatient consultations, more than 4,400 pre-operative assessments and over 13,900 other procedures.

Cabinet secretary for health and social care, Humza Yousaf, visited the hospital last week to officially mark the start of this new project.

Kier said it will utilise modern methods of construction (MMC) throughout the build, including a hybrid pre-cast concrete frame, the envelope of the building being pre-cast with windows and brickwork completed off site.

The project is due to be complete by June 2023 and as part of Kier’s commitment to leaving a lasting legacy in the areas in which it builds, at least 65% of its supply chain will come from a 30-mile radius of the hospital. Kier will also provide a range of opportunities to the local community including at least ten apprenticeships, work placements, job opportunities and career talks at schools.

The latest award follows Kier’s successful completion of the eye centre for the hospital and is part of the hospital’s expansion programme.

Chief executive of NHS Golden Jubilee, Jann Gardner, said: “We are delighted to be working with Kier on this exciting project as we continue to expand our services for the people of Scotland.

“We recently marked the completion of Phase 1 of our expansion with the opening of our new, state-of-the-art, Eye Centre: the first of the National Treatment Centres. This started treating patients in November 2020 and this year is estimated to carry out over 12,000 cataract procedures, an increase in the numbers of patients at least 3 years ahead of schedule.

“We now look forward to benefiting patients across Scotland with our new Surgical Centre, which is due to be completed in 2023. The new Centre will carry out planned operations and focus on demand areas such as additional orthopaedic, diagnostic endoscopy, and general surgery.”
