Kilmac helps deliver Perth allotments

A neglected artificial football pitch in Perth has been given a new lease of life.

With backing from Tayside civil engineering contractor Kilmac, volunteer-led community group Your North Muirton has transformed the graffiti-ridden eyesore off Bute Drive into an allotment space for green-fingered residents to enjoy.

Bailie and group member Councillor Chris Ahern welcomed the project, which has seen more than 30 raised planter beds created, with more than 20 already snapped up.

He highlighted the successful partnership between the local community and the business sector.

“The MUGA had been neglected and it had fallen into a state of disrepair,” he said.

“Now it has been transformed into a fine community garden asset that North Muirton can be proud of.

“Like many grassroots projects, it faced challenges — from funding to the scale of work required — but the team’s passion and commitment never wavered.”

Craig Allardyce, secretary of Your North Muirton, thanked Kilmac for turning their dreams into reality.

He said: “We had a clear vision to create a green space where people could grow flowers or fresh fruit and veg and come together here in the garden.

“Group member David Swan has been a passionate advocate of the community gardens project, and we were delighted to receive backing from the local authority’s Participatory Budget, which involved a public vote.

“Now we are hoping to install a polytunnel which can be used year-round.”

Kilmac’s community engagement programme has supported various groups and projects, including Beautiful Perth, the YMCA, Craigie Hill Golf Club, The Dunnikier Country Park Development Group and the Sidlaw View Residents Association’s Birkhill playpark.

“When Your North Muirton reached out, Kilmac was more than happy to lend a helping hand,” said group director Derek Ross.

“The team stepped in to design, build, and donate 33 raised beds.

“It’s great to see three plots being retained by the team to grow produce that will be shared free of charge with residents in the neighbourhood, helping support those in need and improve their diet.

“We were delighted to learn that 20 of the plots have already attracted interest - a sure sign that the space will be well used and appreciated.

“It was nice to see Baillie Ahern at the official opening. He has been a champion of community initiatives in the area.

“This is the latest example of Kilmac collaborating with local communities on projects designed to enhance the quality of life in areas where many of our staff live.

“We are proud of our track record in giving something back to communities across Tayside, whether it is through sponsorship or providing our expertise in terms of construction work.

“We support a wide range of community driven initiatives in the Dundee, Angus, Perth and Kinross and Fife areas.

“Last year the value was more than £50,000 in terms of labour and materials. This year we are already beyond the £30,000 mark.

“The North Muirton allotment shows what can be done when communities lead the way with backing from the business community.”
