The unused container, located on Helen Street close to the M8, was previously used for storing gas, which is now commonly kept in underground pipes.

Gasholder owner SGN intends to give more details on the demolition works to the council after a contractor is appointed and a detailed site assessment undertaken. It said the demolition is not urgently necessary for health and safety reasons.

Energy regulator Ofgem requires all gas holders across the UK to be dismantled by 2029.

A document lodged with the council said: “SGN are applying a consistent approach to the demolition of a number of redundant gas holders across their estate.”

The document requested written notice from the council that prior approval is not needed for the works and the demolition “constitutes permitted development”.
