LAR lodges affordable homes plan to save Glasgow Green tenement

LAR Housing Trust has submitted plans to transform a fire damaged B-listed tenement building at Glasgow Green into 45 affordable flats.

The roof of the former hotel at Greenhead Street, which was known as the Inn on the Green, was destroyed by fire in 2014.

Under the plans, LAR hopes to retain the facade while demolishing the remainder of the building.

A statement submitted to city planners explained: “As a consequence of the fire damage and water ingress over six years, the damage to the interior and structure of the building is severe and unsalvageable.

“The site has been derelict since 2006, and despite planning approval for hotel and residential use…the site has remained undeveloped.

“The local area is in very high need of affordable housing and LAR considers the site to be compatible with the delivery of mid-market housing which (in line with LAR’s other developments)…will be offered for rent to people with a local connection as a high priority group.

“LAR Housing Trust has funding in place and is in a position to deliver this development.”

There would be eight one-bedroom and 37 two-bedroom flats. There would be secure cycle stores for every flat. A laundry, indoor recreation space and flexible office space would also be provided.

Ann Leslie, chief executive of LAR, told our sister publication Scottish Housing News: “This is exactly the kind of project that we hope will make a considerable difference to the communities in which we operate.

“This self-build proposal will create 45 high quality, new flats in a burnt out tenement that has been decaying for the best part of a decade. Our plans include retaining the facade of the building to ensure it is in keeping with and sympathetic to its surroundings.

“We have enjoyed an excellent relationship with Glasgow City Council already with our existing sites at Belvidere and Helenvale and hope to continue working closely with them going forward.”
