Luddon Construction begins work on new Hurlet crematorium

This project is one of four that is currently in development by Horizon throughout the UK, with its Clyde Coast and Garnock Valley Crematorium also built by Luddon Construction and opened in the Summer of 2018.

Luddon Construction has been appointed as the main contractor on the Hurlet Crematorium project, with Robertson Design Practice as architect, Grossarts Associates as structural and civil engineers and ERZ as the landscape architects. Construction work began in November this year with the works due for completion in October 2021.

Construction of the crematorium is a hybrid design utilising bespoke timber kit and structural steel to create a two-storey crematorium. The facilities will include a large, bright and modern Ceremony Hall, incorporating the latest in high-end audio and visual systems, a large and well-appointed family reception area, alongside modern staff welfare and administration areas.

Externally there will be a newly formed access avenue leading to the car parking areas and the memorial gardens, plus extensive upgrades to the A736 Glasgow Road carriageway, including a new traffic island for safe access into the facility.

The Ceremony Hall will accommodate 100 to 150 people with flexible high quality individual seating and further seating and standing space within the Waiting Area for up to 80 to 100 people. This new, modern facility will provide a flexible and inspiring space that can be arranged to suit all individual family requirements.

The Hurlet Crematorium is located approximately 600 metres to the south of the locally well-known Hurlet Junction.

Jeremy Hamilton, joint managing director of Horizon Ceremonies, said: “We very much enjoyed working with Luddon Construction on our award-winning Clyde Coast & Garnock Valley Crematorium facility, which was delivered on time and on budget, led by Jordan Keatings and the project team.

“As a company, we now have a set building layout and architectural design for our facilities across the UK, based on extensive family and funeral director research, which ensures that the bereaved can move through our buildings in the most dignified, calm and comfortable way.

“This set design and layout means that we can very accurately tender for the works on our projects, and yet again, Luddon Construction responded to the competitive tender invitation in the clearest and most professional manner – delivering the stand-out tender response in terms of quality and commercially.

“For us, team work and good communication is absolutely key, and this is exactly what you get from Luddon Construction – a modern contractor, filled with bright and committed people, and one that understands the need for good commercial skills and open communications, alongside, crucially, excellence in the delivery of significant civil engineering and high quality building projects.”
